It doesn’t take an expert to realize that the video game industry is here to stay. And that means that there is a great need for those who can effectively design video games. Video games are more than what you see on the surface, or on the screen. There are many bits and pieces that go into creating them, and for them to become popular they also have to be synergistic.
While it may not take a rocket scientist to design video games, it may just be the da Vinci and Einstein level of genius that it takes to get it done right. On the other hand, you might be able to take classes.
Here are some basic sequences for designing great games.
- Imagination to create a game idea.
- Rough sketches or storyboards of the world your game will be played in and the characters and actions of the sam.
- Considering the universe of your game, make a list of details to be included.
- Create a design document where all elements of your game exist.
Develop Your Idea
The storyline of your game must come first. Brainstorming with friends may be the best way to achieve this. Then create the game goals by asking questions about what you want the players to do. While you don’t want to be stealing from another game, you can come up with some ideas when you play games that are already available. Here are some places to look.
- Games played in the real world: Games like football and hockey are a great place to come up with some ideas for futuristic versions.
- Videos and Movies: Sci-fi and thriller movies are loaded with ideas for games, just be sur
e to get permission before using story lines and characters that are identical to what you have watched. - Games: You can improve on some of the contents of other games without copying them.
- Nightmares and other dreams: The mind can be a battlefield at times so tap into the nightmares you have for game ideas. You just may come up with the next greatest experience when you do.
Okay, so now you know something about where to get your ideas, and you have already written out your plot, and here is where it gets a bit trickier. You have to consider every detail of everything that is possible in the game and write it down, if you don’t it is just not going to take place during play. You also have to decide on the structure and rules and write them in as well. as you can see, it can get pretty complex when you are writing this script.
It is true that just about anyone can design their very own game, and with the vast amount of software that is available, that makes it anyone’s game as to who will develop the next game to go viral. However, is you are really into games and want to see what you can do by making a career out of video game design; you really should look into enrolling in a video game designer school.
