What You Need to Know About Video Game Design

Contrary to what the name sounds like a video game doesn’t do the actual design of the game. What they do is design and create all the documents about the game. Then everyone else takes those documents and creates the video game. The documents that the are created can be compared to blueprints and the designer is the architect of the game.

If you are passionate about video games and think that video game designer career sounds right up your alley then you need to know what the basic requirements for the job are. Not only will you create the documents that set up the design of the video game you will also help create the plot and the look and feel of the video game. A video game designer gets to help establish the game’s content. Each game has technical components, as a designer you would get to help determine what those are.

There are some skills that you are going to need to have. One is that you are going to need to be able to speak more than one programming language. At a minimum you should be fluent in 3, and the more you know the better you are. You should also be familiar with the different kinds of games and systems, as well as knowing what the trends are. You have to have a very good eye for detail so you can make sure that you can take care of any problems.

On the educational front you will need to have a certificate in computer science. That certification should also include a secondary specialty like graphics, computer science or other related mathematical field. You also need to have several years of experience working in design, development or production of video games. You should have at least 5 years at a minimum.
