Video Game Designer Jobs

A Look at Video Game Design Jobs

What is it that appeals to you the most about video games? Is it the concept or genre of the game? Is the storyline of a game that compels you? How about the graphics in the game? Are they what really captivate your attention? For many, it is definitely the visual allure of the games which is most interesting anp appealing. In fact, some are so mesmerized by the graphics they become interested in video game design as a career.

Contrary to what some might believe, there is a wide range of career paths available to those interested in a career in video game design. No matter what area of design expertise you possess, you will likely be able to find a position which meets your skills and experience. Here are a few of those video game designer jobs you may be interested in:

Artists and Animators:

Those that have a knack for drawing and creating unique characters and replicas of existing characters will likely find the job of an animator to be among the more interesting and exciting tasks in animation. After all, you will have the ability to bring your creations to life…that is certainly exciting!

Storyboard Artists:

This role is found in the movie industry as well and it entails the creation of sequential art for the purpose of literally drawing out the narrative on paper (or, these days, on a computer) so it can be visualized. While not the most well known of design jobs from the public’s perspective, it always remains one of the most important.

Texture Artists:

The visual look of the many video games would surely be lacking if the characters all looked the same. The texture artists serve the role of changing the many shades of skins on the game allowing the three-dimensional aspect of the game to manifest. This is not a minor benefit because you always want the game to maintain a certain component of depth perception or else the game will be very visually flat which, in turn, means it will be visually dull.

Level Designers:

Level designers play a role somewhat similar to that of the texture artists. How so? Basically, those that design levels are recreating the environment in which you play in as you move up the ranks to the next level. If all the backgrounds, levels, and environments remained the same, that would be more than a little dull which is why creating new looks to levels must always be in the hands of capable designers.

Sound Technicians:

No, those cool sounds you hear on a video game are not the result of random events. A qualified sound designer crafted them which are why they are so seamless.

Yes, there is much more to being a video game designer than most people realize. It is suggested to those wishing to become involved in this field to either start as an intern or take a “foot in the door” entry level job to launch your career path the right way.
